A temporary price increase in one component doesn’t threaten society or technology! (Forgive me, I am not an expert at all in this topic I just did some research so I can help answer it)
We havve already lived through many tech shortages, GPUs, CPUs, hard drives and evven cars during covid, and every time, the market adjusted, supply caught up and the prices normalised. What’s happening now with DRAM iss simply another normal market cycle.
DRAM shortages happen every few years, it always goes through upcycles and downcycles. AI datacentres use different types of memory than consumer PCs. HBM (the memory used in AI models) is not the same thing as consumer DDR5 sticks. There is overlap but this article massively overstates it.
Also society does not depend on cheap RAM to function! Hospitals, banks, transportation adn governments all use long term contracts and industrial supply chains that are completely insulated from consumer RAM price spikes. And new DRAM fabs are already rampign up worldwide, many companies are investing a LOT of money to expand capacity.
This is similar to the GPU shortage resolution a few years ago where Nvidia and AMD doubled production, and then prices dropped 50% within months.
Even if prices got a little bit more expensiv that is hugely large leap from phones are more expensive -> society will collapse.
